Routine Cleaning

A routine dental cleaning, also known as a prophylaxis, is a preventive dental procedure designed to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Performed by a dental hygienist, it involves removing plaque, tartar, and surface stains from your teeth—especially in areas brushing and flossing may miss. Routine cleanings help prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues before they start.

What to Expect:

During your cleaning appointment, you can expect:

  1. Oral Examination – A hygienist will examine your mouth for signs of inflammation, cavities, or other concerns.

  2. Scaling – Specialized instruments are used to remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the teeth and below the gumline.

  3. Polishing – Your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel.

  4. Flossing & Rinsing – A final floss and rinse help clear away debris and leave your mouth feeling refreshed.

  5. Optional Fluoride Treatment – Strengthens enamel and provides additional cavity protection (often recommended for children and adults with high cavity risk).

Appointments usually last 45–60 minutes and are recommended every 6 months.

Advantages of Routine Cleaning:

  • Prevents Tooth Decay and Gum Disease
Regular cleanings remove bacteria that cause cavities and periodontal (gum) disease.

  • Keeps Your Breath Fresh
Reduces buildup and bacteria that contribute to chronic bad breath (halitosis).

  • Protects Your Overall Health
Poor oral hygiene is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic issues. Cleanings support your general well-being.

  • Preserves Your Smile
Polishing removes stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco, helping maintain a brighter, whiter smile.

  • Saves Money
Early detection of dental problems can prevent the need for costly, extensive treatment later.

Aftercare Instructions:

  • Resume normal brushing and flossing the same day, unless advised otherwise.

  • Avoid staining foods or beverages (like coffee, red wine, or berries) for at least 24 hours if you’ve had a fluoride treatment.

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and flush away bacteria.

  • If you experience sensitivity, use a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.

  • Schedule your next cleaning in 6 months, or as recommended by your dentist or hygienist.
